about TCM acupuncture
Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that takes the entire being into consideration, so naturally it can treat or support a wide range of conditions.
- pain management
- rehabing injuries - muscle strain, fractures, repetitive strain injury, etc.
- injury prevention
- stress, anxiety, and sleep issues
- headaches and migraines
- digestive concerns
- menopause
- menstrual issues + women's health

Most people experience very little to no discomfort. The needles are extremely thin and most people find the treatment incredibly relaxing and calming.
There may be increased discomfort when inserting needles into tissue that is tender and inflamed, however this discomfort should be temporary and will be monitored carefully by your acupuncturist.
You can best prepare for your acupuncture treatment by:
- completing your intake form prior to arrival to ensure you optimize your appointment time
- having a small bite to eat or snack prior to your session. Try to avoid fasting or eating heavy meals right before your treatment
- stay hydrated
- booking your acupuncture treatment at a time where you can both arrive and leave in a relaxed state
The number of treatments varies depending on your condition, health goals, and how long symptoms have been present. Your treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
Keep in mind that the more chronic your condition has been, the more treatments you will have to commit to. More acute conditions will require less treatment.
A general guideline
- for acute conditions: 1-2 treatments/week, total of 4-6 treatments. Maintenance treatment may be required every 4-8 weeks or as needed
- for chronic and severe conditions: 1-2 treatments/week, total of 10-20+ treatments. Maintenance treatment may be required every 4-8 weeks
Many people feel relaxed, energized, or experience symptom relief immediately after treatment. Some may notice soreness or temporary changes as the body responds to treatment.
Minor bruising or discomfort that lasts 24 hours is not uncommon after acupuncture, especially when working with tissues that are very painful and inflamed.
Do not hesitate to reach out to your acupuncturist if you have any questions or concerns following treatment.
Acupuncture is a very gentle treatment, so the downtime and aftercare is minimal.
We do however have a few recommendations on how you can best optimize results:
- avoid any intense and strenuous physical activity within 24 hours of your treatment. The body is in a healing state at this time and straining your body during this time can interfere with this process. Walking and gentle movement is permitted
- avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking after your treatment
- avoid applying ice packs. Opt for heat instead if you are feeling pain or discomfort after your session. Acupuncture works to stimulate blood flow and circulation, and cold does the opposite
- avoid stimulating or high stress environments the day of your treatment
- avoid extreme temperatures including exposure to the intense elements, as well as saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, cold showers/plunges for at least a few hours immediately after treatment
Many extended health benefit plans include acupuncture coverage. Check with your provider to confirm your specific benefits.
